Preventive Medicine
Preventive Medicine is a trend in modern medicine aimed at intervening before the onset of a disease or its complications to prevent or mitigate the development of the disease or its complications. The saying “prevention is better than cure” and the notion that “it is easier to treat diseases in their early stages” may be common, but implementing this in practice is not as straightforward as one might imagine.
Many diseases do not exhibit obvious symptoms in their early stages (such as diabetes and hypertension). When the body does not recognize a problem and daily life is not significantly affected, it is easy to overlook and procrastinate. By the time symptoms begin to appear, complications may have already developed, and the condition is often more difficult to treat. We hope to increase public awareness of preventive medicine and, by raising awareness about the prevention of chronic diseases, encourage early detection and appropriate treatment to improve the health of individuals and their families.
Colon Cancer Screening Program
According to the Department of Health’s website, colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Hong Kong. In 2022, there were a total of 5,190 newly registered cases. Among the fatal cancers in Hong Kong, colorectal cancer ranks second. In 2023, there were 2,266 deaths.
Homes Medical Centre is currently offering a colorectal cancer screening program, fully funded by the government, for Hong Kong residents aged 50 to 75 who have no symptoms, at no additional cost. Participants will first undergo a fecal occult blood test to detect tiny amounts of blood that are not visible to the naked eye. If the test is positive, they will be scheduled for a colonoscopy to remove any potential polyps, preventing them from developing into cancer. Early diagnosis at the initial stage of the disease can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment.
Eligibility criteria for participants:
- Aged 50 to 75
- Hold a Hong Kong Identity Card
- Have joined the Electronic Health Record Sharing System (more details at https://www.ehealth.gov.hk/tc/index.html)
- Not including individuals with colorectal cancer symptoms, high-risk factors, or those who have undergone colorectal cancer screening or tests within a specified period (please click here to learn more)

Chronic Disease Co-Care Pilot Scheme (CDCC)
A public-private partnership provides convenient screening services for diabetes and hypertension, as well as blood lipid tests. Offers personalized health management plans for program participants to control risk factors for chronic diseases. Aims at early prevention of chronic diseases and reduction of related complications. Practice the concept of “One person, One family doctor”.
Hong Kong residents aged 45 or above who have no known history of diabetes or hypertension can participate in the Chronic Disease Co-Care Program and be paired with a family doctor for screening and long-term follow-up of diabetes and hypertension.
Under the program, eligible individuals will share part of the cost through a co-payment model and, with government funding, receive screening for diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, doctor consultations, laboratory tests, and prescribed medications tailored to their health status, with follow-up services provided by nurses and dedicated healthcare professionals.
If participants are diagnosed with high blood sugar or already have diabetes or hypertension, they will receive government subsidies and long-term follow-up with their chosen family doctor. Those with high blood sugar can enjoy up to four subsidized consultations per year; individuals with diabetes and/or hypertension can enjoy up to six subsidized consultations per year. Participants prescribed basic medications under the “Chronic Disease Co-Care Program” after diagnosis will not need to pay extra for these medications.
